making young people's good ideas happen

What

In many rural areas of Cornwall youth provision is hard to come by. We aim to take a van to a variety of villages. The van will be equipped with a kitchen and a small sound system. The kitchen will be based on a slide out table and facilitate several young people cooking or preparing food.

Apart from the entertainment value we intend to promote healthy eating and teach cooking skills. For instance burgers are generally bought in boxes from a supermarket. We will purchase free range mince and show young people how to make a burger. We do not intend to change the food a young person eats, i.e. burgers, pizzas, currys…. we intend for it to be healthy though.

We have a couple of local celebrity chefs interested in the scheme including Nathan Outlaw a 3 star Michellin chef. They have expressed a willingness to be involved and we have already run a cooking session with Nathan and several young people.

We will be encouraging young people to cook for themselves and their friends and possibly look at doing community bbqs or maybe meals for local counsellors. The project is an extension of the work we already undertake and we believe will add value to young people. With access to the training courses we run and to celebrity chefs we hope that possible knock on effects will include one or two young people becoming chefs.

As an organisation we have worked with many local young people and discovered a desire to not only cook but for this to be a community activity. We have already run 2 successful meals for counsellors and a local business group. Young people have also taken turns to cook and serve meals for each other.

We have identified the need for this project by observing the communities that we intend to visit and noticing the number of young people who are on the streets. We have also chatted with the young people and whilst they have many and varied ideas for what they would like to see in their community, this was one recurring theme that we felt could be met.

We intend to serve the communities of the Clay District of Cornwall starting with St Dennis and Luxulyan and also Lostwithiel and Fowey. Additionally, we have worked with an organisation in Bowling Green and have seen an opportunity for meeting young people at pre-arranged points and taking them to a bigger community to work together.
